Morongo Valley's Groves Cabin Theatre Launches Fundraising Drive
Iconic High Desert venue requests community support as it readies for exciting 2022-23 return season
MORONGO VALLEY, Calif. — Following a three-year hiatus brought on by the pandemic, Groves Cabin Theatre is seeking a helping financial hand as it prepares for its awaited resumption of operation — and its return to offering high-quality live theatre for the community, High Desert and Greater Palm Springs region — this fall.
The extended closure was harsh on the property and structure housing the intimate, 20-seat performance space. The building was broken into and vandalized, and part of a lar
ge tamarisk tree split off and damaged the roof. Vermin further damaged the exposed interior. In addition, an outdoor storage shed collapsed and, most regrettably, a trailer containing costumes and props was stolen.
Overwhelmed by the resulting challenges, Groves Cabin cofounder Joy Groves has ceded the task of restoration to longtime supporter and award-winning local theatre actor-director Abe Daniels, whom she has named artistic director of the venue.
“We want to continue following Joy’s extraordinary example of providing a quality theatre experience for all patrons, and to showcase both professional and local talent,” said Daniels, who also is the proprietor and caretaker of Wind Walkers Medicine Wheel, a performance and Native American ceremonial venue in nearby Joshua Tree. “The inside of the Cabin needs to be repaired and generally freshened up, and we must replace our modest inventory of costumes and props. The funds raised will be applied directly to these repairs and replacements. Any donation will be deeply appreciated.”
With the venue now operating under a nonprofit foundation, all donations are tax deductible. Donations can be made by visiting gofundme.com and entering Groves Cabin Theatre in the search line.
